Original Screenplay

Could Win: Brad Bird for The Incredibles could claim more than the animation award. Mike Leigh is another dark horse who cannot claim the director award, and might be awarded here instead. However, he lost even the BAFTA award to Kaufman and it would be a huge surprise if the roles would reverse here. Should win: It should be Charlie Kaufman's time after missing out with Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. The most original and refreshing work of all the nominees (except perhaps The Incredibles). Will win: Kaufman seems to have found the key to both critic appraisal and box-office success with Eternal Sunshine. Winning virtually every original screenplay award given this year, including the WGA, he should not be denied again.

Adapted Screenplay

Will Win: Alexander Payne and Sideways have one of the most certain locks here, after winning in its turn, every adapted screenplay award given out this year. Should Win: If I had a ballot my vote would go to Motorcycle Diaries whose screenplay succeeded to show us the young, non-revolutionary Che Guevarra and his gradual transformation without falling into the pitfalls of propaganda. Could Win: I guess one can never count out Million Dollar Baby for a surprise...
