The votes in all these categories, except for animated feature film will be cast only by those members that attended screenings of all the nominated movies in the respective categories.
Foreign Film
Will win: Spain's Mar adentro is the clear favorite this year. Amenabar is a respected director and while the movie's topic is entirely the same one that caused a lot of controversy around Million Dollar Baby, I doubt that will affect the select group of academy members who went to all 5 foreign movie screenings. Could Win: South Africa's Yesterday could be a dark horse, as a recognition for a country receiving its first ever nomination.
Documentary
Should win: Born into Brothels is clearly the most powerful of the group and does not fall into the pitfalls of Hollywood endings or unhidden bias like other documentaries often do. Could win: Super-Size Me is the box office hit of the group, a Michael Moore-esque warning on the influence of fast food on our health. Hollywood, with its strong stands on healthy diets and politics, will certainly have a strong preference here. Will win: Born into Brothels may prevail as the true best achievement in the category.
The guesses in the short movie categories are simply guesses based mostly on the titles of each movie, their producing studios and sometimes the topic they address. Unfortunately I have seen only a couple of them.
