Golden Globes 2005 Winners
The show is on and here are the main winners along with whatever brief comments added while watching along:
- Best Drama: Brokeback Mountain
- Best Comedy/Musical: Walk the Line
- Best Director: Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain)
- Best Actor (Drama): Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote)
- Best Actress (Drama): Felicity Huffman (Transamerica)
- Best Actor (Comedy): Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line)
- Best Actress (Comedy): Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line)
- Best Supporting Actor: George Clooney (Syriana)
- Best Supporting Actress: Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardner)
- Best Screenplay: Larry Mc Murtry & Diana Ossana (Brokeback Mountain)
- Best Foreign Film: Paradise Now (Palestine)
George Clooney was no surprise as a winner and immediately mentioned that he feels cheated to go up on stage before even getting the chance to have his first drink. Well, let's just hope he will get up on stage later on for directing or screenplay and see how well he holds his drinks. Rachel Weisz on the other hand was a bit of a surprise in a race that however did not have any huge favorite.
Isn't it such a low point when an award winner doesn't show up to pick it up? As Paul Newman didn't show up for his TV supporting actor win, I was almost waiting for Jessica Alba to announce "Since the winner is not here to receive his award, we will give it to... Donald Sutherland". Oh well. In the meantime, Sandra Oh shows his full crazyness and spirit wobbling towards the stage and on stage to receive her award, but... we love her :) Staying in the TV realm, Geena Davis is unsurprisingly winning as Mrs. President in Commander in Chief and she is totally hillarious on stage with her heartwarming story about a little girl that told her that now she wants to become president after seeing her role, only to admit that the story did not actually happen...
Back to the movies Reese Witherspoon deservedly and totally unsurprising wins as best actress in a comedy/musical but as cute as she is, her speech was quite bland thanking her amazing husband for flying from Toronto to be with her tonight... yawn.. Then to Chris Rock's surprise there are enoug Snoop Doggy Dogs watching Weeds to give the next award to the only nominee that plays a "desperate" housewife who is not on Desperate Housewives.
Paradise Now expectedly wins the foreign movie award, marking Palestine's recognition. Amusing though how the movie is listed as a co-production from Germany/France/Netherlands/Israel on IMDB. Best Score award goes to hmm.. Memoirs of a Geisha. I guess it went to John Williams moreso than the score or movie itself. Best Song goes to Brokeback Mountain.
The Cecille B. DeMille award going to Anthony Hopkins was truly a great moment, a good recollection of some of the best roles in movies and indeed one of the greatest actors alive.
Walk the Line sweeps the comedy/musical awards with Joaquin Phoenix following Reese's win and the movie winning Best Picture for its category. No surprises here and all deserved wins in my opinion. Of course, things will not be easy at the Oscars where Brokeback Mountain seems to be the monster to beat. Before moving on to the Drama movie awards, Lost wins best TV Drama series.
Felicity Huffman deservedly wins the Best Actress in a Drama, edging I believe Charlize Theron. I am pretty sure she does not regret not winning for Desperate Housewives, although as she says in her thanks, they are her family.
Finally, again to noone's surprise Philip Seymour Hoffman wins for Capote and Brokeback Mountain wins in the drama category. Will the Oscars be equally unsurprising? To be fair, it wouldn't be so bad if they would duplicate the awards. Well, except for Rachel Weisz.
Anyway, that's it from the Golden Globes 2005.
