Should Win: Amy Adams Could Win: Michelle Williams Will Win: Rachel Weisz
As in the Best Actress category, it is hard for me to be entirely objective since I know without a doubt who I believe deserves to win.
Amy Adams steals the screen with her performance in Junebug and I could (and am) sufficiently happy that she was recognized to the point of being nominated. But when her main rival is Rachel Weisz I am definitely not content. Weisz's performance in Constant Gardener is indeed pivotal for the movie, yet it is, in my opinion, a mainly adequate performance, not something to rave about. Adams' performance, in contrast, mixes tenderness, naivety, liveliness, compassion and understanding creating a perfect portrayal of the southern/midwestern spirit.
Michelle Williams is also receiving a lot of praise for her performance alongside Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain. She also has a chance at winning this, but then again, I don't see this happening unless Ledger (and perhaps Gyllenhaal as well) win too. Those that loved the movie will have a hard time justifiying giving the award to Williams while snubbing the two male leads.
Catherine Keener and Frances McDormand have both very solid supporting performances. Keener is for me the unsung star of Capote, and if she gets recognized it will be unfortunately mostly a carry-on from PS Hoffman. McDormand, also slightly in the shadow of her co-star Charlize Theron, is further hampered by the fact that her role is in a movie that didn't generate enough buzz.
