Golden Globes 2006

OMG. The Oscar Nominations are almost due. The Golden Globes are on right now. And I haven't done anything for this year's predictions?

Anyway, here's quick notes from the Golden Globes.

First win, Supporting Actress going to Leonardo DiCaprio! No, wait. That was a joke. Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls. Then Prince won something... heh. I guess they're trying to make the Superbowl half-time show seem more interesting?

Next...

Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka) fails to stop time and the award for best Supporting Actor in a TV show goes to Jeremy Irons in Elizabeth. Hiro still needs to tune his power!

  • Best Actress in a TV Drama: Kyra Sedgwick – The Closer (TNT)
  • Supporting Actress in TV show: Emily Blunt – Gideon's Daughter (BBC)
  • Best Actor in TV Drama: Hugh Laurie – House (FOX)
Laurie wins twice in a row.
  • Animated Film: Cars
Like anyone thought any other movie can win here? Sad though... not much to talk about this year in animation.
  • Actress in a Comedy/Musical: Meryl Streep The Devil Wears Prada
Good role, but... there were probably 3 out of the remaining 4 actresses which deserved this just as much if not more.

  • Miniseries or TV Movie: Elizabeth I (HBO)

  • Eddie Murphy – Dreamgirls
Planning to watch the movie tomorrow, but not much of a surprise here.
  • Actor in miniseries or TV Movie: Bill Nighy – Gideon's Daughter (BBC)
  • Actress in miniseries or TV Movie: Helen Mirren – Elizabeth I (HBO)
She seems to become the ultimate Elizabeth, whether it's I or II (The Queen)!

  • Best Screenplay: The Queen

  • Best TV Show Comedy: Ugly Betty

The Desperate Housewives are dethroned by... Ugly Betty. How ironic. Oh and Alec Baldwin won for something before... can't be othered to check what it was though...

  • Best Foreign Film: Letters from Iwo Jima

Clint Eastwood found a way to win for... foreign film! Now this nomination (and win) is at least for a good movie. But... nominating Apocalypto ??!!??? What is the foreign press thinking??!! Oh and Prince actually did show up... fashionably late, about 1hr later...

  • Original Score: Alexandre Desplat (The Painted Veil)
  • Actress TV series comedy: America Ferrera – Ugly Betty (ABC)
Perhaps the only genuine recipient of the night, together with the entire cast of the show which also were genuinely happy and surprised.

Warren Beatty received the Cecille B. DeMille award and... what an impressive set of movies he was involved with! Or as Tom Hanks put it: What balls this man has! And by that I mean artistic vision. The most promising newcomer can also be envied for his family life with Annette Bening.

  • Best Director: Martin Scorsese The Departed
Scorsese wins the.. Clint Eastwood category and he's bound for the Oscar as well. I predicted him to win a couple of times before, but given that this is really his weakest movie in recent years makes me so sure, I can even bet.
  • Best Actor, Comedy: Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat)
Cohen gives up his Borat accent in favor of his natural British speech and delivers a perfect gentlemanly thank you speech dedicated mostly to... his co-star's testicles and anus. Outrageous yet hillarious, as always.

  • Best Comedy/Musical: Dreamgirls

  • Best TV Drama: Grey's Anatomy (ABC)
  • Best Actress, Drama: Helen Mirren The Queen
Thoroughly deserved, in a category with several worthy nominees.
  • Best Actor, Drama: Forest Whitaker The Last King of Scotland
Truly emotional, Whitaker's performance is, with little doubt, the best of the year.

  • Best Picture, Drama: Babel

While not an amazing film, it's refreshing to see the award not going to The Departed, while the other nominees didn't have enough weight to pull off the win.

On to the Oscars now. Nominations coming in one week.
