Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (USA) (Miramax) (2003) ****Year: 2003iMDB
Director: Quentin Tarantino Cast: Umma Thurman, Lucy Liu, Sony Chiba
Kill Bill is the anxiously awaited 4th Tarantino movie (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown) and its coming also tells us that his next movie will not be another 6 years away, but rather in early 2004, as Kill Bill was split into two "volumes" since it became too lengthy for a single movie.
Kill Bill is Tarantino's hommage to the classic Japanese samurai movies, to the Japanese anime and to the Hong-Kong martial arts movies. The result is a fast-paced action movie with intense fight sequences and over the top violence, with countless body parts chopped off followed by endless jets of blood filling the screen. The result is so obviously exaggerated that it is less disturbing and even funny at points, while fans of the mentioned genres will be happy to watch the movie repeatedly not only for the obvious style similarities but for the hundreds of details and nods given to specific movies.
If you ever plan to watch the movie, go in theaters for the full experience. Aside from the image and sound effects, the soundtrack of the movie is also memorable - I was particularly impressed with the use of Gheorge Zamfir's pan-flute theme "The Lonely Shepherd".
