Pieces of April (USA) (United Artists) (2003) ****Year: 2003iMDB
Director: Peter Hedges Cast: Katie Holmes, Patricia Clarkson
A very non-traditional Thanksgiving movie, with a content ranging from the expected heartwarming Thanksgiving spirit to real drama and filled with lots of dark humor. Katie Holmes plays the April Burns, the "black sheep" of a family of 3 kids who tries to reconcile with her mom (and the rest of the family) by inviting them over for what may very well be her mom's last Thanksgiving dinner (she has terminal cancer). Alternating between April's efforts to prepare a proper traditional dinner, despite her obvious lack of experience and her family's reluctant trip to April's New York appartment, the movie doesn't slack and entertains throughout. A small gem.
