The Door in the Floor (USA) (Focus Features) (2004) ****1/2Year: 2004iMDB
Director: Tod Williams Cast: Elle Fanning, Jeff Bridges, Kim Basinger, Jon Foster
Jeff Bridges plays Ted Cole, a children book writer, married to Marion (Basinger) as a family still struggling with the death of their two sons several years ago. He decides to accept a young teenager (Foster) as his apprentice and helper for a summer, summer which will prove to be a turning point for his marriage and for dealing with the pain of their loss.
While the movie's main theme is that of a marriage surviving loss and pain, Door in the Floor manages to be a smart, mature, somewhat dark, comedy which works well on multiple levels and resists very well to scrutiny and multiple viewings. Based on a novel by John Irving, this is one of the unexpected gems of 2004.
