Ghost in the Shell II: Innocence (Japan) (DreamWorks) (2004) ***1/2Year: 2004iMDB

Director: Mamoru Oshii Cast: Akio Otsuka, Atsuko Tanaka

Innocence is a hard movie to define. With stunning animation and filled with philosophical and cultural references the movie certainly provides a powerful experience. However, I need a second viewing (and I haven't done that yet) to be able to decide whether the complexity of the dialogue is better grounded than the random mix that the Matrix sequel movies offered. Fans of the first movie will likely be impressed and would love Innocence, but first time viewers will have a hard time understanding the characters without knowing their history and how they got to the current point. An impressive movie, but if you're looking to make one of your first steps towards complex sci-fi/philosophycal stories watch Immortel first.
