Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (USA) (Focus Features) (2004) ****1/2Year: 2004iMDB
Director: Michel Gondry Cast: Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Kirsten Dunst
Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) brings to screen (as writer and producer) another one of his original stories. Eternal Sunshine... is as bit as quirky as his previous movies, but this time the message of the movie is quite clear and quite endearing, which makes it more accessible: love, and our true feelings, cannot be erased even if we want to.
Joel (Carrey), the apparent shy eternal secluded bachelor, and Clementine (Winslet), a very dynamic, fiesty, with the ever-changing hair color girl, are an apparently unlikely couple that however have a great time together. All until, after a silly fight, they break up and Clementine decides to use the services of Lacuna Inc. a company specialized in erasing unwanted memories in order to remove any recollection of Joel and their common past.
While you can surely predict the ending, the surreal story of the two soul mates is fascinating and unique, and Jim Carrey leads a great cast with an even stronger performance than the one in Truman Show. Looking forward to the next Charlie Kaufman project.
