Collateral (USA) (Dreamworks) (2004) ***Year: 2004iMDB

Director: Michael Mann Cast: Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx

Michael Mann shows once more that he is able to produce quality thrillers. This time he relies on a very simple idea. Vincent (Cruise) is a hit-man who has to kill 5 people in one night, witnesses in an important trial. As he needs to go in different parts of town he hires a cab driven by Max (Foxx) for the entire night, for $600. Max has seen his share of strange customers so he accepts the unusual offer only to see a dead body fall onto his windshield as he waits for Vincent to return from their first stop.

What follows is a dynamic act between the two main characters, as Max realizes he is driving a killer but is not allowed to leave since Vincent still requires the help of a driver. The movie has its weak plot points, and does suffer the curse of the Hollywood endings with predictable although not always justifiable turns of action. However, Cruise and Foxx manage to keep the movie interesting and edgy, saving it from mediocrity.
