Constantine (USA) (Warner Bros) (2005) **1/2Year: 2005iMDB

Director: Francis Lawrence Cast: Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz

Constantine is the first "summer blockbuster" of 2005 and... yah, there's a reason that it came out in winter. Adapted after the comic book Hellblazer, it stars Keanu Reeves as the reluctant, cynical, demon slayer Constantine. I will not delve into a comparison with the comic book, as the movie was doomed from the start as the screenwriters decided to make Constantine's character American (he is quite british in the comic books, living in Liverpool). In addition, Constantine also falls into the usual pitfalls of making all the wrong choices, diminishing or changing completely characters' importance, traits and motivations.

As a popcorn-special-effects-no-expectations-action movie, Constantine is fairly entertaining, although in my case half the entertainment came from unintended laughs. Decent special effects and a glimpse of an interesting universe where Satan and God play a game trying to control the humans without directly interfering add up to a fun evening in case you're tired of watching Angel or Buffy reruns.
