Assault on Precinct 13 (USA) (Focus Features) (2005) **1/2Year: 2005iMDB

Director: Jean-François Richet Cast: Ethan Hawke, Lawrence Fishburne, Drea de Matteo, Maria Bello, Gabriel Byrne

Remake of the 1976 John Carpenter film, Assault on Precinct 13 may not raise to the level of the original (which in turn is inspired by the classic Rio Bravo) but it doesn't fall much behind. When a group of corrupt cops are trying to assassinate a convict (Fishburne) that may expose their previous dealings, their plans don't go smoothly and they have to attempt to kill all the convicts housed in the precinct at that time as well as the honest cops and innocent civilians that happened to be in the precinct on that new year's night, during a major snow storm. Young sergeant Jake Roenick (Hawke) decides to arm the prisoners in order to have a chance of surviving and what ensues is a classic siege thriller. A solid movie built around a rehashed classic theme.
