Layer Cake (UK) (Sony Pictures) (2004) ***1/2Year: 2005iMDB
Director: Matthew Vaughn Cast: Daniel Craig, Colm Meaney, George Harris
Layer Cake is easiest to describe by pointing towards the previous two British gangster movies: Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Matthew Vaughn clearly follows Guy Ritchie's work, but manages to add his own style to the genre, the result being a darker movie, with more subdued humor, although hillarious at times.
Daniel Craig plays the unnamed main character, a middle level drug dealer who is forced by circumstances into more action than he actually enjoys, and has to learn to adapt quickly in order to stay alive. The movie is filled with a lot of colorful characters ranging from deadpan cool to plain wacky. The plot may get confusing at times, but in the end we are left with a worthy new entrance in the genre.
