Steamboy (Japan) (Sony Pictures) (2005) ***Year: 2005iMDB

Director: Katsuhiro Otomo Cast: Ikki Sawamura, Katsuo Nakamura, Masane Tsukayama

Highly anticipated japanese animation production, coming from the director of acclaimed Akira, Steamboy is a visual treat. The great animation however, cannot completely overcome the lacking story.

Similar to Miyazaki's movies, there is a serious underlying theme disguised behind a fantasy world. In Steamboy the fantasy is derived from the setting of 19th century England and it allows for superb animation combining period settings with complex machineries, a flying castle and extended battle sequences. The underlying theme raises questions about the role and potential misuse of science in the modern world, but the story drags and the movie seems just too long. Worth watching for the animation only.
