De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté (France) (Canal+/Wellspring Media) (2005) ***Year: 2005iMDB

Director: Jacques Audiard Cast: Romain Duris, Niels Arestrup, Linh Dan Pham, Jonathan Zaccai

It seems that the remake fashion has reached the old continent as well, as Jacques Audiard's movie is a remake of the 1978 Fingers starring Harvey Keitel. However, the french version stands quite well on its own, particularly through Romain Duris's (Gadjo Dilo, Auberge Espagnol) performance as a young man torn between two very contradictory life paths. One one hand he could be the loan shark collector that his father was, on another he could follow his childhood dream, instilled by his now dead mother, to become a concert pianist.

This is a very moody movie which tells a story that you cannot easily identify with in its extreme details, but which resonates as a classic theme of people torn between choices. It is a movie that film lovers will appreciate but it may be hard to recommend to a casual viewer.
