Corpse Bride (UK) (Warner Bros) (2005) ***Year: 2005iMDB
Director: Tim Burton, Mike Johnson Cast: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Watson, Tracey Ullman, Christopher Lee
While everyone inevitably compares Corpse Bride with Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas for using the similar stop-motion animation techinque, I found myself comparing it rather with LucasArts classic adventure games such as Grim Fandango or Monkey Island. The skeleton dances were almost straight out of a game and even Victor's character seemed the likely hero of such a game.
While I felt that not all the musical numbers were as good, Danny Elfman shines with a couple of beautiful piano numbers, particularly the piano duet that Victor shares with his corpse bride Emily, but unfortunately both are featured all too briefly in the movie and the soundtrack does not contain longer versions either.
Corpse Bride may not reach the cult status of the Nightmare Before Christmas, but at only 76 minutes runtime it is surely entertaining.
