The Curse Of The Cat People (USA) (RKO) (1944) ****1/2Decade: '40siMDB
Director: Robert Wise Cast: Simone Simon, Oliver Reed, Alice Reed, Amy Reed
The Curse Of The Cat People is a sequel to The Cat People, made 2 years prior. I have to admit that I have never seen the first movie, but the second movie more than stands on its own. It is not a scary movie in the modern sense, but is certainly haunting and beautiful. It centers around a lonely little girl who seems to be lost in her own, fragile fantasy world; the adults around her do not understand her at all, and the only kindred spirit she has is the mysterious Cat Woman, played by Simone Simon. Anyone who grew up reading fantasy stories, and/or playing with an imaginary friend, will feel tugs of recognition from this story. In that sense, it could be taken more as a drama/romance about childhood rather than horror/fantasy, but there is just enough of those elements in there to make it a true classic of that genre.
