Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (USA) (Magnolia Pictures) (2005) ****1/2Year: 2005iMDB
Director: Alex Gibney
Enron's downfall was the biggest financial scandal of the past decade and its ripples are still not settled. Over 2 billion dollars of pension and retirement funds were lost, while executives and traders made millions and hundreds of millions.
Alex Gibney tackles Enron's story based on Fortune writers' Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind book and his documentary is one of the most professional I have watched in recent years. Using senate and court-room hearings, interviews with the major players involved, interviews and commentaries by the book authors as well as Enron employees at various levels, tapes and other recordings, the documentary lays out most of Enron's creative booking techniques, their attempt at creating the bandwidth market and delves the most in the California energy crisis where Enron played a huge role.
Catch this on DVD as its a worthy account for anyone that has any interest in the business world.
