Charles Shine (Owen) is married, has a decent job, but his joy of living is shadowed by the fact that his young daughter suffers from a rare form of diabetes which may only be cured with a new, yet untested, treatment. As he goes through his daily routine he meets Lucinda Harris (Anniston), a successful businesswoman who he soon becomes attracted to. As the two, both married with kids, decide to start having an affair, they get attacked, robbed and raped.
Derailed who seemed to be a character drama, turns into a thriller as Shine continues to be blackmailed by his attacker who figured that he is too guilty for having an affair that he will choose not to tell the authorities or his wife about the real circumstances of his attack.
Ultimately, Derailed may become too unplausible towards its tumultuous end, but it still provides good entertainment.
