Art School Confidential (USA) (Sony Pictures Classics) (2006) ****Year: 2006iMDB
Director: Terry Zwigoff Cast: Max Minghella, Sophia Myles, John Malkovich, Jim Broadbent, Steve Buscemi
Terry Zwigoff follows Ghost World and Bad Santa with a strong satire directed at the fakeness, superficiality and hypocrisy of the art world, focusing more precisely on the smaller art school universe and the aspiring artists that frequent it. A world where abstract paintings consisting of entirely random lines are considered brilliant exponents of the artist's true self, while classic drawing is "lame", where murder is what you may need to do in order to become famous and admired (assuming ass-kissing is not your thing) and where every student is nothing but a non-adapted cliche hoping to become famous and therefore accepted and loved by the rest of the world.
The movie keeps the sarcasm at a very steady pace even though it settles in a somewhat predictable direction towards the end. For the lovers of the genre, Art School Confidential makes a good companion to this year's Thank You for Smoking.
