2004 will end this week February 21, 2005

We have entered the last stretch for the 2004 movie year. Next Sunday, the Oscars will take place and once that is over we can start looking at what 2005 has to offer. I know, it is unfair for the early movies of every year, but this is basically the way it always happens - no one really notices the movies that come out the first two months of the year, no producer/distributor really wants to release their top movies in the early months of the year. I wonder how does that feel for the directors whose movies come out that early...

That is however why the theaters in January stay mostly packed with the Oscar contenders which linger on right until the Oscar night. Following that, the winners will have another stab at getting money from the crowds and the door will slowly open for the new movies to come out. The notable event for February is though the Sundance film festival, the place which once was the exclusive turf of under-budgeted exotic movies which rarely made it to the large public, and now is turning into the biggest bidding ground for the major studios hoping to hit the jackpot finding the sleeper hit in the group of independent movies.

But, like I said, I still live in 2004 for another week. So I'm still catching up with some movies and compiling my top 10 list which I hope will be up soon. About Sundance and what lies ahead in 2005, right after that.
