The Comic Book Battle March 18, 2005

Posted by TheCasualCritic in movie talk

After watching the Hellblazer based movie Constantine, I did some quick browsing and discovered lots of battling going on with comic book movie adaptations. Superman Returns, Wonder Woman, X-Men 3, etc...

Wonder Woman has found its (or her) director in the person of none other than Joss Whedon, famous for creating the cult phenomenon Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. According to Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros signed Whedon to write and direct the action movie. Whedon also produced the unfortunately canceled TV series Firefly and is set to release in September 2005 the motion picture version of the show: Serenity.

The battle of titans seems to be set for summer 2006 when ex-X-Men director Brian Singer should release the anxiously awaited reinstatement of the comic book flagship: Superman with Superman Returns. For all the internet maniacs and blog fans, Singer is making available a video diary of his endeavours on bluetights.net. The competition to Superman is supposed to be the third installment of X-Men: X3, under the helm of newly appointed director Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake). Vaughn will have on his side the well established cast from the previous hit movies, while Superman will have a brand new hero in the person of Brandon Routh. For now I'm hoping that both movies will be great.

At the same time 20th Century Fox seems to be going ahead in parallel with their other X-Men related project, the spinoff Wolverine. Not many details are available but Hugh Jackman seems to be onboard together with other actors from the original movies.

In the meantime, brace yourselves for the 2005 premieres. Coming soon: Sin City (April 1st), Batman Begins (June 18th) and the highly awaited Fantastic Four (July 4th).
